In Memoriam - Terry Simmons
On April 3, 2017 Terry succumbed to long term after-effects of an accident that took place in 2005 and had robbed him of much of his mobility, vitality and presence with us. No single person is more significant to the life and viability of Charitable Gift Annuities and the American Council on Gift Annuities than Terry L. Simmons.
In the mid 1990’s, Terry founded Charitable Accord and worked as the lead lobbyist and strategist in an effort to protect the interest of charities and non-profits that issued Charitable Gift Annuities, or who had ever been associated with the American Council on Gift Annuities. In defense of the American Council on Gift Annuities, his efforts in organizing charities led to the passage of federal legislation that included The Charitable Giving Protection Act of 1995 (which amended the Sherman Antitrust Act), The Philanthropy Protection Act of 1995 and The Charitable Donations Antitrust Act of 1997.
In 2008, the Board of Directors of the American Council on Gift Annuities established the Terry L Simmons Scholarship Fund. The Fund provides scholarship grants for the American Council on Gift Annuities Conference to new professionals in the planned giving field. In this way, we honor Terry and provide major exposure to a national training event to those beginning their planned giving careers.
In lieu of flowers at the Celebration of Life for Terry, the family requested that memorial gifts be considered to the American Council on Gift Annuities Terry Simmons Scholarship Fund.
