What Do Successful Charitable Gift Annuity Programs Have in Common?

In the 2017 Survey on Charitable Gift Annuities, for the first time, an analysis was performed on program growth trajectories. Of the 102 charities who met the selection criteria for analysis, over 25% saw a 50% or greater increase in dollar volume of their CGA programs as compared to the previous survey in 2013. The analysis revealed two key common characteristics:

  • Rapidly growing programs shifted from smaller cash gifts to larger property gifts. Rapidly contracting programs did the opposite.
  • Rapidly growing programs increased emphasis on marketing and administrative flexibility.

These findings were so compelling that a deeper look was needed. The ACGA and the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners (CGP) partnered to conduct a joint survey to expand the inquiry and identify the best practices for growing charitable gift annuity programs. This survey will be published in April 2020 and will be discussed in detail during a breakout session at the 34th ACGA Gift Planning Conference in Atlanta, April 20-22.
