What motivates CGA donors? A new survey aims to find out

What if you could peek inside the minds of CGA donors across the country, understanding why they chose a CGA, what influenced their decision, and how satisfied they are with their experience? The ACGA is launching a nationwide donor survey in mid April, and the insights we gather could help all of us better serve our donors and strengthen our programs. But we need your help to make it happen.

Why this matters

This survey explores questions that many of us have been asking for years: how do donors first learn about CGAs? What motivates them to establish a CGA? Which communication channels influence their decisions?

Designed in partnership with TIAA Kaspick, this brief ten-question survey takes less than five minutes to complete and will help us better understand the donors we serve.

Why TIAA Kaspick is supporting this research

As one of the nation’s leading providers of planned giving services, TIAA Kaspick supports planned giving programs of more than 130 nonprofit organizations across the country.

“We work with hundreds of organizations and thousands of CGA donors, and we’ve long recognized the need for comprehensive research into what drives donor decisions,” said Mark Ladendorf, Chief Client Relationship Officer, TIAA Kaspick. “By partnering with ACGA on this survey, we’re investing in research that will benefit the entire field, helping organizations of all sizes create more satisfied donors and stronger programs.”

“One of our core beliefs is that creating fulfilled donors is essential to a successful planned giving program,” added Mark. “This survey will help us all understand what success looks like from the donor’s perspective—not just our assumptions, but their actual experience and motivations.”

What you’ll receive

When you participate, you’ll receive a comprehensive report on donor perspectives gathered from hundreds of organizations nationwide. This means you’ll benefit not just from your own donors’ responses, but also from the experience of diverse programs of all sizes. The findings can help inform your communications, shed light on what resonates with donors, and incorporate insights from donors themselves.

A collective effort

“This survey represents a unique opportunity for our entire community to gain deeper insights into the donors we serve,” said Renee Kurdzos, ACGA Board Vice President of Engagement. “The more organizations that participate, the richer and more meaningful our findings will be—and the better equipped we’ll all be to strengthen our CGA programs.”

“Understanding what motivates donors and what makes them happy with their gift annuities is fundamental to building successful programs,” said Mark. “This research will provide data that simply hasn’t existed before, and we’re committed to making sure it reaches everyone who can benefit from it.”

How to participate

We’ll provide all materials, including sample messaging and FAQs, to make participation easy. You will distribute the ACGA-provided survey link to your CGA donors between April 7 and May 1. Respondents will share their answers anonymously (unless they choose to identify themselves) through a secure platform.
