Joe Bull is the Founder and Principal Counsel of Philanthropy Advisor Counsel. With 39 years of experience in the philanthropic arena, Joe is known as an effective leader of highly performing advancement teams and for his technical expertise as a charitable gift planner. Over his career, he has helped facilitate 11 eight-figure gifts and 101 seven-figure gifts totaling $414.74 million, and his teams have been responsible for $811.5 million of philanthropic support. Throughout his career, Joe has embraced the challenge of rebuilding languishing programs and building new programs from the ground up. He is a nationally recognized speaker and author on philanthropic issues. His comments and writings have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Forbes, Trusts & Estates, Planned Giving Today, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. Joe received a BS in Business Administration, summa cum laude, from The Ohio State University. He also earned both an MA and a JD from Ohio State. Fun Facts About Joe
What was your first job?
The first check I ever received was from a local farmer for bailing hay. The first organization I worked for was my hometown cemetery. Yes, my first real job really was being a grave digger. Guess I was destined for a career in gift planning. My first gift planning job came right after law school when I was hired as the Assistant Director of Planned Giving at Duke University in 1985.
When did you first learn about charitable gift annuities?
My “orientation” at Duke consisted of reading Conrad Teitell’s two-volume treatise on planned giving. Of course, there was a huge section devoted to charitable gift annuities.
If you could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
New York Strip – medium rare
If your life had a tagline, what would it be?
Do everything with passion, but keep it in moderation; don’t overdo anything.
